Dallas Floodway Extension Project

The DFE Project is funded by the citizens of Dallas and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at approximately a 75% federal share and 25% City share. Through the 1998 Bond Program, the City of Dallas has authorized $24.7 million for these efforts. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers must seek federal funding each year in order to continue with the design and construction. Through fiscal year 2015, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has received $91.4 million of Federal funding from Congress. Local and federal elected officials work diligently each year to ensure that the project moves forward with yearly federal funding.

The Dallas Floodway Extension Project begins at Eighth Street and continues out slightly past IH-20 toward the south of downtown Dallas. This project consists of:
  • A levee extension system (Cadillac Heights and Lamar Street levees)
  • The combination of the Lower Chain of Wetlands (already complete) and the Upper Chain of Wetlands (currently under construction) with upper and lower swales, separated at Interstate Highway (IH) 45.
  • Grasslands and woodland areas
  • Recreational trails, approximately 30 miles
  • Environmental mitigation for 1,179 acres of land along the Trinity River primarily located within the Great Trinity Forest
  • Restoration of the Rochester Levee System and the Central Wastewater Treatment Plant
